Course Update

November Report

October’s focus was on the final preparation for over-seed along with the seeding process itself. All preparations were on track with the course primed to receive seed and temperatures reaching the optimum levels for rapid germination. Unfortunately the day prior to seeding the golf course suffered significant flooding from heavy rainfall on Saturday 20th October and again on Friday the 26th. During the 20th we received in excess of 4 inches of rainfall over a short period which caused significant washing of bunkers and major flooding on holes 3, 4, 5, 8 and 16. We also experienced high volumes of lighting which resulted in a number of trees been damaged around the golf course most notable on hole 15.

While it was a positive that the course was scheduled for closure due to the over-seeding process this flooding delayed seeding by up to 5 days on holes 1, 3, 4 and 8. The over-seeding closure is scheduled at 12 days as this is the time required for the seed to fully develop; any delays have a knock on effect on the development of the new seedlings. The delays suffered were caused mainly from our irrigation infrastructure been damaged from the flood water/ lighting storm along with the time required to remove surface waters from the worst affected areas.

As a result of the delays holes 1, 3, 4 and 8 are behind schedule and will not be fully developed prior to reopening on 2nd November. In an effort to protect the seed to enable prime conditions through the winter months we had to make the decision to restrict carts to paths and desert areas only where possible on the front 9 for an extended period. This restriction will prove critical in ensuring prime conditions across the main playing season; with the exclusion of these 4 holes the over-seed this season have shown very positive results and we expect all holes to fully develop over the first weeks of November.

During closure we also achieved the following trimming of all Palm trees, native grass pruning of the back 9, re-painting of course benches, renewal of course signage and placement of new flags, cups and sticks. During the course closure all our agronomy equipment was serviced and sharpened to ensure precise mowing of the winter over-seed.
Looking ahead to November and our focus will be on developing the over-seed to achieve final mowing heights along with improving detail and bunker conditions on the golf course. It will a busy few weeks ahead with our club championships and Kind Hamad tournaments scheduled; the agronomy team will be focused on course set up for these events. Works to remove the dividing wall between the putting green and driving range will be completed in November; this will ease movement between the practice areas and café-t.  The over-seeding of both the Wee Monty and Country Club areas will occur as per the below dates -

Wee Monty
  • Sunday November 4th – 15th Inclusive – Re-opening Friday 16th November
Country Club Lawns
  • Sunday 4th November – Thursday 8th November – Re-opening Friday 2nd November

Facility of the Year

Former General Manager DJ Flanders displays the award for 2013 "Facility of the Year"

The Royal Golf Club’s board of directors and senior management team are delighted to announce that the Club has been recognized as the “Troon Golf Facility of the Year 2013,” the top annual award from Troon®, the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing.

The Club was selected from over 200 Troon-managed golf properties around the world at the annual Troon Conference which took place in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA from 14th to 16th January. Five golf clubs were shortlisted for consideration for the award including Troon North, the flagship property in Arizona.

“This award is a huge accolade and a tribute to the hard work of our dedicated team and supportive Membership,” commented DJ Flanders, former General Manager of the Royal Golf Club. “This is the first time a club has received the award in the first year of coming under Troon’s management so it’s a great achievement. Receiving such a prestigious award will bring the Club and Bahrain as a whole to the attention of the world’s golfing community.”

The criteria considered included the results of annual member, guest, owner and associate satisfaction surveys as well as financial results. The facility was able to reduce its operating costs substantially and significantly improve its GOP by implementing Troon standards. The facility also recorded solid Guest Satisfaction Scores in 2013 through the introduction of impactful programs including Troon Rewards, Troon Executive Card and Troon Values Your Time.

“I’m proud of our golf club being awarded Facility of the Year for the Troon Golf portfolio for 2013,” added Shaikh Rashid Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain International Golf Course Company, the owning company of the Royal Golf Club. “The award shows the dedication and hard work of the management and staff. I would also like to thank the Members, Troon Golf Management, Board Members and Shareholders for their support. This award puts our golf club with a select group of golf facilities from around the world.”

Attended by over 400 delegates, the conference was the biggest in Troon’s 25 year history. Bruce Glasco Senior Vice-President and Managing Director, Troon International Operations commented. “This award not only recognizes the hard work and effort by the whole team at the Royal Golf Club but also the unflinching support from the Board of Directors. For the winner of this award to come from the International division not only demonstrates the way in which our programmes can be adapted to work in every part of the world but also the way they are embraced by our Associates to deliver for all our members and guests."
