September was a busy month for the team as we commenced the new golfing season and focused on preparation for over-seeding. While temperatures reduced humidity remained high during the month which caused difficult working conditions for the team. Overall the course recovered well from summer heat stress with limited dry areas present and a good uniform colour across all areas. Greens continue to perform strongly with true ball roll and speeds of 10 on the stimp meter; currently we are reducing watering volumes to improve firmness and encourage root development.
September marked the removal of summer working hour restrictions which has enabled the team to make good progress on detailing works around the golf course. We will continue our focus to improve desert areas and remove landscape in landing zones around the golf course. Works to revisit bunker sand depths are ongoing and improving consistency within hazards. Other works of note in September included regular vertical mowing of all surfaces, pruning of tree canopies and cleaning of lakes and streams.
Looking ahead to October and the team will be focused on developing desert areas through weeding and thinning of plants, bunker sand dept works and annual trimming of Palm trees will be completed. The irrigation team will be busy working on irrigation adjustments and pump servicing to ensure systems are operating effectively ahead of over-seed. We plan to adjust some mow lines in fairways and approaches to increase playability, improve pace of play and reduce the impact transition causes to the golf course. All surfaces will receive final preparation for receiving seed on the 27th of October, seeding equipment will be prepared and all materials readied to ensure a successful process.
The championship course will be fully closed for 12 days to enable all surfaces to be seeded together and to remove the need for temporary greens. Please note the below closure dates for over-seed.
Championship Golf Course, Driving Range Tee and Short Game
In addition to the seeding practice the agronomy team will prune all Palm trees and commence the cutting of native grasses during the over-seed closure. All marker stakes and benches will be renovated during closure.
The agronomy team would like to extend our thanks for your ongoing support and hope you enjoy your golfing in October.

Former General Manager DJ Flanders displays the award for 2013 "Facility of the Year"
The Royal Golf Club’s board of directors and senior management team are delighted to announce that the Club has been recognized as the “Troon Golf Facility of the Year 2013,” the top annual award from Troon®, the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing.
The Club was selected from over 200 Troon-managed golf properties around the world at the annual Troon Conference which took place in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA from 14th to 16th January. Five golf clubs were shortlisted for consideration for the award including Troon North, the flagship property in Arizona.
“This award is a huge accolade and a tribute to the hard work of our dedicated team and supportive Membership,” commented DJ Flanders, former General Manager of the Royal Golf Club. “This is the first time a club has received the award in the first year of coming under Troon’s management so it’s a great achievement. Receiving such a prestigious award will bring the Club and Bahrain as a whole to the attention of the world’s golfing community.”
The criteria considered included the results of annual member, guest, owner and associate satisfaction surveys as well as financial results. The facility was able to reduce its operating costs substantially and significantly improve its GOP by implementing Troon standards. The facility also recorded solid Guest Satisfaction Scores in 2013 through the introduction of impactful programs including Troon Rewards, Troon Executive Card and Troon Values Your Time.
“I’m proud of our golf club being awarded Facility of the Year for the Troon Golf portfolio for 2013,” added Shaikh Rashid Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain International Golf Course Company, the owning company of the Royal Golf Club. “The award shows the dedication and hard work of the management and staff. I would also like to thank the Members, Troon Golf Management, Board Members and Shareholders for their support. This award puts our golf club with a select group of golf facilities from around the world.”
Attended by over 400 delegates, the conference was the biggest in Troon’s 25 year history. Bruce Glasco Senior Vice-President and Managing Director, Troon International Operations commented. “This award not only recognizes the hard work and effort by the whole team at the Royal Golf Club but also the unflinching support from the Board of Directors. For the winner of this award to come from the International division not only demonstrates the way in which our programmes can be adapted to work in every part of the world but also the way they are embraced by our Associates to deliver for all our members and guests."
