December was a busy month for the agronomy team setting up the course for a number of large golf events and winter projects commencing. During the month we experienced several rainfall events which enabled irrigation to be reduced and soil flushing to occur. The over-seed continued to develop during the month with all areas showing good coverage and density. With temperatures above average during the month along with rainfall aggressive growth in rough areas was a challenge; by month’s end plant growth regulation applications along with adjusted mowing frequency has enabled control to be gained. Greens are performing well with good ball roll and speeds of 10-10.5. Recent worm control applications are beginning to show positive results in controlling casting activity.
As the month progressed the team began more aggressive works in desert areas with several locations having shrub and native grasses removed along with reshaping of sand to improve upon playability; stone removal is another major focus of the team for the season ahead. Our focus will remain on landing zones and high play areas of desert as we strive to improve the presentation of waste areas. All native grass pruning on the championship course was completed in December with the Wee Monthly scheduled for next month.
Looking ahead to January and our focus will remain on desert improvements of stone, shrub and native grass removal. Works will commence on renovating the worst performing bunkers by repairing drainage and liner along with adding sand as needed. Once completed renovated bunkers will play softer than desired for a period of a few weeks until the new sand beds in and reaches full compaction. Other areas of focus will include tree canopy pruning, irrigation head leveling and lake cleaning. Behind the scenes the workshop and irrigation teams will be busy with winter servicing and overhaul works to ensure equipment and irrigation infrastructure is operating effectively. The irrigation team is currently working on adjusting several sprinkler heads to improve the coverage of water applications and limit wastage water in desert areas; these works will be ongoing through to late spring
The agronomy team would like to extend our thanks for your ongoing support and hope you enjoy your golfing in 2020.

Former General Manager DJ Flanders displays the award for 2013 "Facility of the Year"
The Royal Golf Club’s board of directors and senior management team are delighted to announce that the Club has been recognized as the “Troon Golf Facility of the Year 2013,” the top annual award from Troon®, the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing.
The Club was selected from over 200 Troon-managed golf properties around the world at the annual Troon Conference which took place in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA from 14th to 16th January. Five golf clubs were shortlisted for consideration for the award including Troon North, the flagship property in Arizona.
“This award is a huge accolade and a tribute to the hard work of our dedicated team and supportive Membership,” commented DJ Flanders, former General Manager of the Royal Golf Club. “This is the first time a club has received the award in the first year of coming under Troon’s management so it’s a great achievement. Receiving such a prestigious award will bring the Club and Bahrain as a whole to the attention of the world’s golfing community.”
The criteria considered included the results of annual member, guest, owner and associate satisfaction surveys as well as financial results. The facility was able to reduce its operating costs substantially and significantly improve its GOP by implementing Troon standards. The facility also recorded solid Guest Satisfaction Scores in 2013 through the introduction of impactful programs including Troon Rewards, Troon Executive Card and Troon Values Your Time.
“I’m proud of our golf club being awarded Facility of the Year for the Troon Golf portfolio for 2013,” added Shaikh Rashid Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain International Golf Course Company, the owning company of the Royal Golf Club. “The award shows the dedication and hard work of the management and staff. I would also like to thank the Members, Troon Golf Management, Board Members and Shareholders for their support. This award puts our golf club with a select group of golf facilities from around the world.”
Attended by over 400 delegates, the conference was the biggest in Troon’s 25 year history. Bruce Glasco Senior Vice-President and Managing Director, Troon International Operations commented. “This award not only recognizes the hard work and effort by the whole team at the Royal Golf Club but also the unflinching support from the Board of Directors. For the winner of this award to come from the International division not only demonstrates the way in which our programmes can be adapted to work in every part of the world but also the way they are embraced by our Associates to deliver for all our members and guests."
