February was a busy month on the golf course with several golf tournaments and high member play. The agronomy team remained focused on presenting the course for daily play and continuing winter projects such as landscape planting, tree pruning, lake cleaning, bunker sand level adjustments and thinning of planting in landing zones. Temperatures remained lower than average during the early parts of the month resulting in the base Paspalum grass remaining dormant; however by month’s end as soil temperatures increased a return to slow growth was observed in our base grass.
The over-seed continue to perform strongly with good colour and growth throughout the month. Greens speeds were maintained at 10.5 during the month with good ball roll and improved recovered of pitch marks seen. Works have been completed on the new seating area at café-T and expanded cart parking which will add a nice addition to member experience and the flow of the practice facilities.
As we look ahead to March the agronomy team will be focused on course presentation for the upcoming MENA Tour and regular play as we strive to present the course in prime conditions for the peak playing period ahead. As temperatures increase in March regular verti-cutting and aeration is planned to ensure turf health and enable light to penetrate the base Paspalum. During March the Paspalum will become more activity growing and our focus will be on encourage strong growth to ensure a smooth transition between winter and summer grass in late spring. Each season the transition period is a challenging period for the agronomy team especially in rough however as always the team will strive to ensure the course is presented for play to our set standards
Other works of note for March include planting a new hedge along the road at hole number 1 tees to reduce sand blow, create increased privacy and noise levels from traffic. Works to renovate the landscape areas around the clubhouse will be ongoing along with bunker sand checks and improvements to desert detailing. The workshop and irrigation team continue to work on winter servicing and overhaul of equipment.

Former General Manager DJ Flanders displays the award for 2013 "Facility of the Year"
The Royal Golf Club’s board of directors and senior management team are delighted to announce that the Club has been recognized as the “Troon Golf Facility of the Year 2013,” the top annual award from Troon®, the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing.
The Club was selected from over 200 Troon-managed golf properties around the world at the annual Troon Conference which took place in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA from 14th to 16th January. Five golf clubs were shortlisted for consideration for the award including Troon North, the flagship property in Arizona.
“This award is a huge accolade and a tribute to the hard work of our dedicated team and supportive Membership,” commented DJ Flanders, former General Manager of the Royal Golf Club. “This is the first time a club has received the award in the first year of coming under Troon’s management so it’s a great achievement. Receiving such a prestigious award will bring the Club and Bahrain as a whole to the attention of the world’s golfing community.”
The criteria considered included the results of annual member, guest, owner and associate satisfaction surveys as well as financial results. The facility was able to reduce its operating costs substantially and significantly improve its GOP by implementing Troon standards. The facility also recorded solid Guest Satisfaction Scores in 2013 through the introduction of impactful programs including Troon Rewards, Troon Executive Card and Troon Values Your Time.
“I’m proud of our golf club being awarded Facility of the Year for the Troon Golf portfolio for 2013,” added Shaikh Rashid Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain International Golf Course Company, the owning company of the Royal Golf Club. “The award shows the dedication and hard work of the management and staff. I would also like to thank the Members, Troon Golf Management, Board Members and Shareholders for their support. This award puts our golf club with a select group of golf facilities from around the world.”
Attended by over 400 delegates, the conference was the biggest in Troon’s 25 year history. Bruce Glasco Senior Vice-President and Managing Director, Troon International Operations commented. “This award not only recognizes the hard work and effort by the whole team at the Royal Golf Club but also the unflinching support from the Board of Directors. For the winner of this award to come from the International division not only demonstrates the way in which our programmes can be adapted to work in every part of the world but also the way they are embraced by our Associates to deliver for all our members and guests."
