Course Update

October Report

Early September was extremely humid however temperatures and humidity reduced significantly towards the end of the month. The humid weather has enabled the Paspalum grass to recover from summer stress and return to a more uniform colour throughout. All surfaces are performing strongly with consistent greens speed of 10 on the stimp meter and true ball roll.

During the month the agronomy team was focused on course presentation and improving detail in desert areas, lakes and bunkers as we strive to present the course in optimum condition for the season ahead. During September the team has adjusted most fairway and approach shapes as we continue our drive to restore the original design intent. These new areas are developing week by week with final mowing heights now achieved. This summer we have made significant changes to green, approach and fairway shapes which has enabled additional pin locations on greens and created wider landing areas on fairways along with a number of runoff areas around greens. The full effect from these changes will be more easily seen after over-seeding when rough heights create better definition around the golf course.

In October our attention will turn to the over-seeding process as we prepare surfaces for receiving seed on the 21st. Once again the championship course will be fully closed for 12 days to enable all surfaces to be seeded at once and to remove the need for temporary greens. The driving range will be closed on the morning of the 28th with play remaining on mats until the 9th November. Please note the below closure dates for over-seed.

Championship Golf Course, Driving Range Tee and Short Game
  • Sunday October 21st – November 1st Inclusive – Re-opening Friday 2nd November. Note: Driving Range Closed morning of Sunday 28th October Only– Playing mats in use until 9th November. Short game closed 21st- 1st November Inclusive.
Wee Monty
  • Sunday November 4th – 15th Inclusive – Re-opening Friday 16th November
Country Club Lawns

In addition to the seeding practice the agronomy team will prune all Palm trees and commence the cutting of native grasses during the over-seed closure. All marker stakes and benches will be renovated during closure.

The agronomy team would like to extend our thanks for your ongoing support and hope you enjoy your golfing in October.

Facility of the Year

Former General Manager DJ Flanders displays the award for 2013 "Facility of the Year"

The Royal Golf Club’s board of directors and senior management team are delighted to announce that the Club has been recognized as the “Troon Golf Facility of the Year 2013,” the top annual award from Troon®, the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing.

The Club was selected from over 200 Troon-managed golf properties around the world at the annual Troon Conference which took place in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA from 14th to 16th January. Five golf clubs were shortlisted for consideration for the award including Troon North, the flagship property in Arizona.

“This award is a huge accolade and a tribute to the hard work of our dedicated team and supportive Membership,” commented DJ Flanders, former General Manager of the Royal Golf Club. “This is the first time a club has received the award in the first year of coming under Troon’s management so it’s a great achievement. Receiving such a prestigious award will bring the Club and Bahrain as a whole to the attention of the world’s golfing community.”

The criteria considered included the results of annual member, guest, owner and associate satisfaction surveys as well as financial results. The facility was able to reduce its operating costs substantially and significantly improve its GOP by implementing Troon standards. The facility also recorded solid Guest Satisfaction Scores in 2013 through the introduction of impactful programs including Troon Rewards, Troon Executive Card and Troon Values Your Time.

“I’m proud of our golf club being awarded Facility of the Year for the Troon Golf portfolio for 2013,” added Shaikh Rashid Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain International Golf Course Company, the owning company of the Royal Golf Club. “The award shows the dedication and hard work of the management and staff. I would also like to thank the Members, Troon Golf Management, Board Members and Shareholders for their support. This award puts our golf club with a select group of golf facilities from around the world.”

Attended by over 400 delegates, the conference was the biggest in Troon’s 25 year history. Bruce Glasco Senior Vice-President and Managing Director, Troon International Operations commented. “This award not only recognizes the hard work and effort by the whole team at the Royal Golf Club but also the unflinching support from the Board of Directors. For the winner of this award to come from the International division not only demonstrates the way in which our programmes can be adapted to work in every part of the world but also the way they are embraced by our Associates to deliver for all our members and guests."
